This paper is your opportunity to explore an aspect of non-Western musical culture. You can explore historical, biographical, political, technical or aesthetic issues in connection with larger themes discussed in class (i.e. diaspora, globalization). In addition to bibliographic research approaches, you can utilize ethnographic methods based on your experience in a local musical community. Your original project should exhibit serious engagement with the topic in question through detailed presentation and explanation of research findings, clear organization of ideas, and effective use of various sources (i.e. live concerts, interviews, books, essays, audio/video recordings, liner notes, etc.). The paper should be between 1,000-1250 words, not including bibliography. Further details will be provided as deadlines approach.
