The gulet — a broad wooden ketch that comes with a cook and a crew already aboard — is a Turkish invention, and it is the least expensive way to charter a boat you do not run yourself. Bodrum and Fethiye hold most of the fleet.

Why it works for a first time

Everywhere else a crewed boat is the expensive answer and a skippered one is the affordable answer. Here the crewed boat is the ordinary answer, so a group that had written off the idea of someone else cooking and steering usually finds the price closer to a skippered week elsewhere than to a crewed one.
